Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool forward, has been inquiring with former teammates about what it’s like to play in Spain

Salah’s future has recently come under scrutiny, with Liverpool appearing unlikely to qualify for next season’s Champions League. There has been speculation that Mo may leave Anfield if he does not have access to top-tier European football.

In response to messages on Twitter, French journalist Santi Aouna reported yesterday that Salah is ‘open’ to moving on. Aouna claims that after six years at Liverpool, the Egyptian has been asking around about playing in La Liga.

“Salah loves Liverpool but is willing to leave,” writes the journalist. “He even contacted some former teammates who are now playing in La Liga…”

If Liverpool recovers and finishes in the top four of the Premier League, this story will be forgotten. But if they don’t, which appears to be the case right now, we may not have heard the last of it.

Mo misses the ferry to Spain.

If Salah was serious about leaving Liverpool, he should have done so last summer. He was due for a new contract and could have gotten a big one like Sadio Mane did at Bayern Munich.

Instead, Mo made certain that he stayed at the club where he’d become a celebrity. It would seem strange to want out a year after signing the biggest contract in Liverpool history.

With two years left on his contract, the fee to get him out of Anfield would have to be massive. Certainly more than the £34 million Liverpool paid for him. Furthermore, Salah is likely to demand that his massive salary at Liverpool be matched.

As a result, it just doesn’t seem like a realistic option for a soon-to-be 31-year-old. The opportunity to join Real Madrid or Barcelona appears to have passed. Mo may be disappointed now that the Reds have been eliminated from the Champions League.

Salah’s form has improved over the last six weeks or so, but he has had a poor season overall.

With Mane gone, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota injured, and Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo settling in, Mo hasn’t been the leader we needed. But there is still time to change things. If Salah wants to play in the Champions League next season, he’ll have to join Liverpool. He still has the ability to make that happen.
