Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has shared his thoughts on the battle to qualify for the Champions League next season, with some mixed news for his former club before the season ends

Despite their dismal start to the season, Manchester United hero Wayne Rooney believes Liverpool can still finish in the top four.

This season has been a disaster for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds. Saturday’s 4-1 loss to former title rivals Manchester City dropped them to eighth place in the table, seven points behind Tottenham in the race for a place in the Champions League.

With only 11 games left in the season, it now appears that the Merseysiders will finish outside the top four for the first time since the 2015/16 season. Despite this, Rooney believes Liverpool can claw their way back into contention and beat Spurs and Newcastle.

“The top four?” he said ahead of his former club’s match at St James’ Park. Manchester United looked like they might challenge for the Premier League title a few weeks ago.
