Responsible Gambling
Responsible gambling means keeping play affordable, time-limited and within your control, and knowing what to do if it stops being any of those things. This page explains the tools that exist, what changes when a casino is not covered by GamStop, and where UK help is available. It is written for adults aged 18 and over.
Facts on this page were last checked on 1 October 2026. Regulations, helpline details and casino terms change, so confirm anything important with the official source.
Our position on gambling and risk
Gambling is paid entertainment, not income and not a way to solve money problems. Every bet has a built-in house edge, so the expected result over time is a loss. Nothing on this site guarantees winnings or withdrawals, and no casino can be described as completely safe.
Some of the casinos we review operate outside the UK system. Our main guide to non GamStop casinos covers them in detail. Please read the sections below before deciding whether that is a sensible choice for you.
Commercial disclosure
This site may earn commission if you join an operator through our links. Commission does not decide rankings or ratings, and the editorial ratings shown are our own assessments, not customer-review scores. You can read more on our About Us page.
What GamStop is and why it matters
GamStop is the free national self-exclusion scheme for Great Britain. When you register, you choose an exclusion period, and every online operator licensed by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) must block your account and stop marketing to you. Exclusion periods offered are six months, one year or five years. Once started, it cannot normally be ended early.
Operators licensed elsewhere are not required to take part. The brands we list, including Betmica, Kikibet and Betninja, are ranked on our site as non GamStop options, so signing up with one would bypass a restriction you may have set deliberately.
If you have registered with GamStop
Be honest with yourself about why you registered. If you chose self-exclusion because gambling was causing harm, using a site outside the scheme undermines that decision. We would encourage you to wait out your exclusion period, and not to treat our reviews as a route around it.
Great Britain versus the wider UK
The UKGC regulates gambling in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales). Northern Ireland has separate legislation. A casino that accepts British customers is not the same as one authorised by the UKGC to serve them.
What changes with an offshore licence
Many casinos not on GamStop hold overseas licences, commonly from Curaçao. These licences are real, but protections differ from the UK regime. Points to understand:
- No UKGC oversight. The UKGC cannot step in on a complaint about an operator it does not license.
- Different dispute routes. UK-approved alternative dispute resolution services may not accept your case. Complaints often go to the casino first, then to its licensor, with uncertain results.
- Weaker affordability checks. Some sites do less to spot harmful patterns, so the responsibility falls more heavily on you.
- Tools vary. Deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion may exist, but they apply only to that one site.
- Ownership can be hard to trace. Check who operates the casino and which licence it states before you deposit.
We have not verified the specific responsible gambling tools at every casino listed. Check each site's own terms and account settings yourself before depositing.
Tools that keep gambling in check
| Tool | What it does | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Caps how much you can pay in per day, week or month | Set it before your first deposit, when you are calm |
| Loss limit | Caps net losses over a period | Not offered everywhere |
| Time-out / cooling-off | Locks the account for a short, chosen period | Good for a quick break, not a long-term fix |
| Self-exclusion (single site) | Closes your account for a fixed period | Does not cover other casinos |
| GamStop | Blocks UKGC-licensed sites nationally | Does not cover offshore operators |
| Blocking software | Stops gambling sites and apps on your devices | Works across sites, including offshore ones |
Gambling blocking software is especially relevant if you play at sites outside GamStop. Several free and paid products exist. The charity GamCare and the NHS both signpost them.
How bonuses can push you to gamble more
Big welcome offers look generous. Betmica advertises 570% up to £5,700 plus 270 free spins, and Kikibet advertises 350% up to 5,555 £ plus 300 free spins. These are casino advertising, and the conditions matter far more than the headline figure.
- Wagering requirements mean you must bet a multiple of the bonus (sometimes the deposit too) before withdrawing. A £100 bonus at 40x means £4,000 of bets.
- Game contribution varies; slots often count fully, table games much less.
- Maximum bet rules can void winnings if you stake too much while a bonus is active.
- Expiry dates and cashout caps may limit what you can keep.
If a bonus makes you want to deposit more than planned, skip it. You can usually decline a bonus at the cashier. We did not verify the full terms for every offer here, so read them before accepting.
Spending and payments: keep them visible
Offshore casinos may handle pounds, euros, dollars or cryptocurrency. For example, WinnerIsland and Smash Casino advertise offers in euros, and CoinPoker in dollars. Currency conversion fees and exchange-rate swings can add cost without you noticing. Cryptocurrency is also harder to track and reverse.
- Use a separate account or budget for gambling only.
- Never use credit, overdrafts or money set aside for bills.
- Check withdrawal limits, fees and verification requirements before depositing.
- Expect identity (KYC) and sometimes source-of-funds checks before cashing out.
No casino can guarantee withdrawals. If a withdrawal is delayed, keep records and follow the operator's complaints procedure. The Terms and Conditions of this site explain the limits of our role.
Sports betting and live play carry the same risks
Many casino brands also run sportsbooks, often sharing one wallet. That makes it easier to move money between products without noticing the total. In-play betting and accumulators move fast and can encourage chasing losses. Decimal odds of 2.00 mean a £10 stake returns £20 if it wins, including your stake, and most bets lose more often than that suggests. Cash-out offers are not free: the price builds in the operator's margin.
Warning signs worth taking seriously
- Gambling for longer or with more money than you intended.
- Chasing losses with bigger bets.
- Hiding your play or lying about it.
- Borrowing, or skipping bills, to fund bets.
- Feeling anxious, irritable or low when you are not gambling.
- Gambling to escape stress, loneliness or debt.
If two or more sound familiar, pause and talk to someone.

How to choose with your wellbeing first
If you have self-excluded, or suspect gambling is harming you, the safest choice is not to use any casino, offshore or otherwise. If you are playing for fun with a clear budget, set limits first, understand each bonus condition, and verify the operator's licence and terms. Questions about this page can go through Contact Us.
