Newcastle United secured a place in the Champions League with a resounding 6-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur

Liverpool’s hopes of making a late push for a Champions League spot were dealt a huge blow on Sunday afternoon when Newcastle United thrashed Tottenham Hotspur 6-1 at St James’ Park.

Prior to the Super Sunday match, Reds fans hoped that fifth-placed Tottenham would be able to do them a favor ahead of the final weeks of the Premier League season. Tottenham’s victory would have kept Liverpool’s lead over Newcastle at six points, despite both teams having played 31 games.

However, the stunning outcome keeps the Reds in the rearview mirror. They are now nine points behind Newcastle, who have moved ahead of Manchester United on goal difference to third place. Manchester United has a game in hand over both Liverpool and Newcastle.

Newcastle’s hopes of returning to Europe’s top club competition for the first time since 2002/03 will be tested in the coming weeks when they face Brighton & Hove Albion, Arsenal, and Chelsea, giving Jurgen Klopp’s side some solace that their rivals could still be caught.
