Roberto Firmino has decided to quit Liverpool because he believes he still has what it takes to be a regular starter
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, who details Firmino’s likely departure in his blog for CaughtOffside. Bobby’s choice not to extend his contract at Liverpool, according to Jacobs, is fairly straightforward.
“Liverpool wanted Firmino to extend, but he was set on taking his time and highly appreciative of the fact Liverpool didn’t put pressure on him for an answer. “It wasn’t an easy decision,” explains the journalist.
“My understanding is Firmino now sees the diversity of the forwards at the club and felt a fresh challenge is preferable because he has a big appetite to be starting the bulk of games. Liverpool have signed Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez, and Salah, despite speculations tying him to PSG, is not leaving this summer. There’s also Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.
“Firmino has not yet secured another club. I believe that suitors who inquired were all told that he would not engage while considering Liverpool’s offer and out of respect for the club.”
Bobby makes the correct decision.
You must give it to Bobby. The easy choice would have been to accept Liverpool’s demands and stay in a place where he’s been comfortable for nearly a decade.
In that case, his playing time would very certainly have decreased during the 2023/24 season. As a result, his legacy at Anfield would have been diminished, not ruined. Firmino, perhaps realizing this, has made the painful decision to move on. It will hurt for the time being, and probably for some time after he leaves. But it’s undeniably the correct decision.
From the perspective of Liverpool, why would they not want to keep Firmino among their attacking options? As Virgil van Dijk previously stated, the Brazil international is the ideal man for Cody Gakpo to learn from. Even if he only plays 15-20 games per season, his contributions on and off the field are definitely worth it.
He knows exactly what Jurgen Klopp is asking for because he has been with the squad for so long. According to Fabinho, Firmino has developed an almost telepathic relationship with many of his teammates.
That’s all very nice. At the same time, Liverpool has demonstrated this season the dangers of holding onto players for too long. You will know when the time has come to part ways. You can’t get away from it, no matter how much it hurts your stomach. Fortunately, Bobby appears to have recognized this.
