Thiago and Luis Diaz could both be in contention to play in Liverpool’s crucial Premier League match against Arsenal this weekend, after stepping up their recovery in training

Thiago has put himself in contention for a comeback against Premier League leaders Arsenal after passing through Liverpool training without incident.

The Spain international midfielder has been a huge loss for Liverpool, with a hip injury keeping him out for the past ten games, during which the Reds’ Champions League hopes appear to have vanished.

Thiago showed his fitness in a serious session between two teams in an 11 on 11 run out after training with the first-team squad all week, and came through with no issues. This has put him in contention to face Arsenal at Anfield on Sunday, where he may be joined by Luis Diaz, who has also trained with the first team squad this week after a five-month layoff.

The Colombia international hasn’t played since being injured against Arsenal in October, and manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that the winger’s return must be approached with caution. However, with Liverpool now needing a near-miracle to finish in the top four, Diaz could be in line for a return.

And there was more good news, as Virgil van Dijk returned to training after missing the 0-0 draw at Chelsea in midweek due to illness.

The trio could all play on Sunday, though Klopp is unlikely to risk all three right away with 10 games remaining to close the 10-point gap on Manchester United in fourth place.

Meanwhile, Klopp will be hoping for an inspiring performance from his team against the Gunners after a difficult trip to Chelsea on Tuesday. The Reds were held to a 0-0 draw, but the manager saw the positives.

“I liked the recovery, the desire to sort out the situation,” Klopp said. “Nil-nil. Not the most spectacular, but a step forward for us. A small step, but one in the right direction.

“I don’t expect us to lack confidence, but I know we have to prioritize hard work.” It’s not the kind of situation where you go out wearing backheels and one-twos. We have to persevere. That may not be what people want to hear, but you can’t change that.

“I saw a really positive attitude from my team tonight, which is exactly what I wanted to see.” This will serve as the foundation for the rest of the season.”
