The Spanish midfielder has struggled with fitness and form in recent weeks, particularly since recovering from a hip flexor injury that has kept him out of 10 games since February.

He recently made his comeback against Arsenal in a 2-2 draw, and he has also played off the bench against Leeds, Nottingham Forest, and West Ham.

Stefan Bajcetic, Roberto Firmino, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Calvin Ramsay are also absent.

Luis Diaz returns to the team today, making his first start since September after recovering from a knee injury that has kept him out for nearly seven months.

At the back, Ibrahima Konate has been re-instated next to Virgil Van Dijk after Jurgen Klopp rested Liverpool’s midweek match-winner Joel Matip.

Harvey Elliott also returns in midfield ahead of Jordan Henderson, as Klopp puts his trust in the young midfield duo of Elliott and Curtis Jones, who has had a resurgence in midfield after starting four of their last five games.

Ben Davies and Dejan Kulusevski replace Clement Lenglet and Richarlison in the visiting side.

A win would lift Liverpool above both Aston Villa and Tottenham into fifth place, but Manchester United’s win over Aston Villa means that even with a win today, the Reds would be seven points behind Erik Ten Hag’s side – who will have played one fewer game.
