Michail Antonio has admitted that he was taken aback by what Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk did against West Ham last week
On the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Antonio spoke with Newcastle striker Callum Wilson.
West Ham’s recent form has improved slightly, and they are no longer in danger of relegation.
Recent victories over Bournemouth, Fulham, and Southampton may just be enough to keep them in the Premier League.
Not only that, but they have a European semi-final against AZ Alkmaar on the horizon.
When they look back on their 2-1 loss to Liverpool, they may feel slightly cheated.
Thiago Alcantara was not penalized for handling the ball in the area after coming on to change the game.
Michail Antonio thought he was going to score against Liverpool if it weren’t for Virgil van Dijk.
The 31-year-old defender has had a difficult season in a Liverpool shirt.
However, he performed a moment of magic that once again demonstrated his obvious talent.
Van Dijk, a Liverpool star, astounded Antonio.
“Virgil [Van Dijk], mate, I don’t get how he’s managed to tap that past me at the far stick,” Antonio said after their 2-1 loss last week.
“He’s literally taken a shot, Said’s [Benrahma], and I’m sliding in at the back.” Goal, there’s no way he’s going to get this past me. “I was devastated!”
Callum Wilson was unconcerned and responded, “I was buzzing!”
Virgil van Dijk has been the foundation of so much of Liverpool’s recent success.
His consistency has allowed the players around him to flourish, making Liverpool a thrilling team to watch.
However, his poor form this season has coincided with the team’s overall struggles.
He appears vulnerable at times, as evidenced by his defending against Ivan Perisic’s goal for Tottenham on Sunday.
However, as Michail Antonio discovered, Van Dijk is still capable of greatness for Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that a proper summer break will allow him to return to his best form next season.
