According to Matt Addison, Liverpool must bring in a slew of new players to pique supporters’ interest for next season after a poor season thus far

THE DETAILS: ANOTHER SETBACK

Wolverhampton Wanderers ripped apart the Reds in a 3-0 defeat at Molineux, adding to the Reds’ terrible season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side is ninth in the Premier League, 11 points behind the top four and Champions League qualifying, with a relegation-threatened Wolves defeat another unacceptable result and performance.

Liverpool had the opportunity to potentially reverse the tide on their season during the January transfer window, but the only acquisition of forward Cody Gakpo for £37 million has so far failed to cure their problems, with no goals or assists in six games in Merseyside.

“There’s no choice really; they’ve got to go out, make three, four, five additions, have a clear out, people are coming to the end of their contracts, and there will be changes within this Liverpool squad.”

THE VERDICT: IS AN OVERHAUL REQUIRED?

Liverpool are on the edge of a crisis due to their poor record, ownership worries with Fenway Sports Group looking for new investors, and the prospect of losing six first-team players when their contracts expire at the end of the season (via Liverpool Echo) (Transfermarkt).

T: ADDISON’S COMMENTS

Following the Wolves setback, Addison stated on the Blood Red live stream that the Reds must go big in the summer not only to add talent but also to get the fans excited for a new season, saying:

(10:07) “Whatever happens in the summer, they’re going to have to spend big, even if they don’t get Champions League football, even if Jude Bellingham decides he wants to go somewhere else

Problems with FSG’s potential sale of the club mean that they will be hesitant to spend given their intention to limit their financial impact in the club, making the departure of first-teamers for free difficult to deal with given the limited funds available to replace them alongside other incomings likely desired by Klopp.

The Liverpool club has been heavily linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund sensation Jude Bellingham, with the Liverpool Echo reporting that Enzo Fernandez’s British record move to Chelsea for £107m will almost certainly see Dortmund want more for the teenager, raising the question of quality versus quantity in the window given potentially limited spending.
