Despite scoring three goals in a World Cup final, France’s 23-year-old forward was defeated.

Argentina defeated France in a gripping showpiece in Qatar, with the Liverpool-linked prodigy scoring a treble over two hours – and, of course, another in the shootout.

Lionel Messi finally holding the trophy will undoubtedly be the primary story of this round of the competition.

Leaving that aside, despite the loss, Mbappe enhanced his status as probably the best player in football.

Marca reported in October that Liverpool were interested in signing the former Monaco wonderkid, amid suspicions that he will leave PSG.

For the time being, speculation regarding his future will be put on hold, but Alan Shearer has paid a loving homage to him – and, of course, Messi – on BBC Sport.

“It was a pleasure to be here to watch it,” he remarked. Messi and Mbappe, thank you. Argentina’s perseverance, the mentality they needed to score in terms of belief. Congratulations, and thank you for amusing us. It was simply incredible.”

As previously stated, Messi is the focus for the time being.

When the dust settles, however, the focus may move to what a terrifying footballer Mbappe truly is – and at 23, he’s only going to get significantly better from here on out.

It remains to be seen whether the Liverpool rumor bears fruit, but one thing is certain: he will cost a fortune.
