Steven Gerrard was asked who the best midfielder he played alongside was in a sit-down interview with Mohamed Salah, and He named Jordan Henderson
During his 17-year career with Liverpool, Steven Gerrard played alongside some world-class midfielders.
Gerrard played for the Reds from 1998 to 2015, and he shared the field with Javier Mascherano, Gary McAllister, and Xabi Alonso.
And today, after conducting an interview with current Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah for the club’s television station. In a video titled ‘When Stevie Met Salah,’ the Egyptian asked Gerrard who the best midfielder he played alongside at Anfield was.
Unsurprisingly, Gerrard chose Alonso as the best player he played with during his nearly two-decade spell in the red of Liverpool.
“Who was the best I ever played with? I used to enjoy playing with Jordan [Henderson] because he was selfless, a leader, and he’d do a lot of running for me. I was older at the time, so I needed Jordan’s energy “Gerrard elaborated.
“But if you’re looking for a certain player, I used to like Xabi Alonso. Alonso used to let me play as a number 10 so that I could have more shots on goal, goals, and assists.”
Alonso won the Champions League with Gerrard for five years, from 2004 to 2009, before leaving for Real Madrid. At their peak, they were both among the finest in the world in their respective positions.
While some fans will undoubtedly scoff at Henderson’s comments — for some reason devalued, despite his significant accomplishments – that praise highlights the qualities that the current Liverpool captain possesses, as accurately recognized by one of the best Reds players of all time.
