As Jurgen Klopp’s team fights for fourth place, they will play games against Chelsea and Arsenal before traveling to Man City to start a busy stretch of fixtures
In order for Liverpool to have a chance of finishing in the top four of the Premier League, they must travel to Manchester City on Saturday morning (12:30pm).
The Reds are competing for fourth place rather than the championship this season due to a decline from last. With two games remaining, Tottenham, who are currently in fourth place, is seven points ahead of Jurgen Klopp’s team as they return from the international break in sixth place.
In a crucial stretch of games that will determine their season, they will play City, Chelsea on Tuesday, and Arsenal the following Sunday. Although Klopp confirmed that Luis Diaz won’t be ready for the match against City, his return to training this week was a welcome development.
The most recent Liverpool news is summarized here in advance of their matchup with Manchester City.
Klopp identifies the illness bug
Prior to Liverpool’s Premier League trip to Manchester City, Jurgen Klopp claims that the team’s players have been ill.
During his Friday afternoon press conference, Klopp revealed the level of fitness of several members of his team, stating that some had experienced “stomach bugs” over the break but thankfully recovered in time for the match.
He said the following about Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita, two midfielders: “Naby has left. He was injured for the national team and returned with a muscle injury. As for how long, we’ll see.
“Although not yet a member of the team, Thiago is doing well. He’ll probably take part in the training the following week. Rhys Williams possesses a trace of something. Every now and then, we had stomach bugs, but that was two days ago.”
Carragher forecasts the “greatest challenge”
Liverpool, according to Jamie Carragher, will be Manchester City’s and Arsenal’s “greatest challenge” in the Premier League title race.
Carragher stated in a piece for The Telegraph: “Apart from when City and Arsenal play each other, Liverpool’s difficulties this season are their biggest challenge.
“City was the team that put an end to Liverpool’s quadruple bid last year. Jürgen Klopp will be driven to undermine Guardiola’s attempt to win the Triple Crown this time.
The logic over the next two weeks is not dissimilar from in previous years for those wanting to celebrate in May, even though this will not be how Klopp wanted or planned it. Regardless of who defeats Liverpool, they will all believe they are getting closer to winning the league. The Treble talk will intensify if City succeeds and Arsenal fails.
Alexander-Arnold identifies crucial components
The upcoming matches between Liverpool and Manchester City, Chelsea, and Arsenal, according to Trent Alexander-Arnold, may help define their season.
“I think [if] we get three big results and it’s game on really, and hopefully the season pushes on to be a good one,” Alexander-Arnold said on the team’s website. If we allow it and if we want it to, these three results can define the season. Our goal is to play well and win each of the three games.
“We probably haven’t always had that confidence as a team this season, in my opinion. However, if we go out and defeat strong opponents, it will restore our confidence. As a team, we are enthusiastic, we appear young and good in training, and we are enthusiastic. It will be a significant week, and hopefully a significant season finale for us.”
