By acquiring a new Bruno Fernandes in January, Manchester United can duplicate Liverpool’s prior transfer success. Cody Gakpo of PSV Eindhoven is a target for the Red Devils, and his signing this winter would signal a turn for the better under Erik ten Hag.

According to reports from the Netherlands, PSV wants to sell Gakpo quickly, and the winning bidder will probably depend on the most alluring payment plan. The Eredivisie heavyweights are asking for £44 million, which, if granted, would be deducted from United’s summer spending plan.

After authorizing Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure in November, Ten Hag is on the lookout for a new striker, and after passing on Antony in the summer, he has identified Gakpo as his top target. United and the 23-year-old agreed on personal terms, and it’s not surprise that they remain interested in him given that he had 13 goals and 17 assists in 24 games prior to the World Cup.

His goal-scoring antics in Qatar increased rumors of a high-profile transfer next month, and United must draw motivation from both Liverpool’s and their own prior transfer success. If Ten Hag hires Gakpo in January, he can acquire his own Fernandes and Luis Diaz.

After coming close to acquiring him in the summer of 2019, United forked over £47 million to entice Fernandes to Old Trafford in January 2020. The Portuguese international rapidly established himself as possibly the most significant acquisition in club history, scoring 40 goals and dishing out 25 assists in 80 games over the course of his first two seasons.

In January of this year, Liverpool also moved quickly to beat out competition for Diaz, securing a £49 million deal amidst his great season for FC Porto. The 25-year-old winger provided much-needed attacking reinforcements for Jurgen Klopp, assisting Liverpool in winning both domestic trophies and narrowly missing out on a hat trick.

If the club allocates funds for Gakpo’s arrival, all indications point to his having the same influence at United.

Due to the Glazers‘ interest for a takeover, there were initially concerns about whether the Red Devils would approve a lucrative contract midway through the season. However, sources suggest Ten Hag will be supported.

The addition of the Dutchman would give Ten Hag access to one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attacking lineups, along with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Antony, and Jadon Sancho.

United must now evaluate Fernandes and Diaz and make sure their future manager has access to the resources he desires and needs.
