On Sunday afternoon, Liverpool were held to a goalless draw at home by Chelsea in Premier League 2
Ben Doak was the star of Liverpool’s Premier League 2 defeat at home to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
Doak made his comeback from a muscle injury with a lively performance in a goalless draw against the Londoners at the Academy in Kirkby.
The young Reds dominated for long stretches against a Chelsea squad that came into the game just three points behind leaders Manchester City.
However, despite a solid starting lineup that included Bobby Clark, Rhys Williams, and Billy Koumetio, Barry Lewtas’ team couldn’t get past Chelsea goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina.
Liverpool gradually grabbed control of the first half after a cagey start, with Doak’s direct running and pace being their most potent attacking weapon. One such run resulted in a corner, from which Dom Corness’s outswinging throw was headed on to the top of the crossbar by Koumetio.
The home side had the better chances, with Doak and Mateusz Musialowski shooting at Slonina and Williams missing with a far-post header from another corner won by the forceful Doak.
The Reds came close again shortly before the break when Clark’s brilliant pass released Owen Beck inside the area, but Slonina saved well from close range at his near post.
Doak forced Slonina to make another good save immediately after the half, while Lee Jonas denied Dylan Williams on a rare Chelsea attack. Koumetio went barely wide with an audacious shot from inside his own half in a bid to emulate his stunning strike against PSG last month, and Luca Stephenson came close late on with a range shot.
