Liverpool may attempt to exploit the European market in the coming months
At Liverpool, the summer transfer window brought much change.
After Sadio Mane, Divock Origi, and Takumi Minamino left Anfield after an incredible six years, Jurgen Klopp was given the chore of reassembling his attacking line.
Darwin Nunez, who was acquired from Portuguese powerhouse Benfica for an initial £64 million, was given the task of stepping in for the departing Mane, who was headed to Bayern Munich. As the club began to lower the average age of Klopp’s squad, Calvin Ramsay and Fabio Carvalho were brought to the Reds’ ranks for a combined sum of little over £10 million.
That appeared to be the end of the market until a slew of midfielder injuries compelled Liverpool to sign Juventus‘ Arthur Melo on a season-long loan. But it seems like there will need to be more additions made next summer.
And come July 1, 2023, a large number of players in the European game will be out of contract. As a result, clubs outside of their home league will be permitted to negotiate with the players and their agents starting on January 1.
And now for a list of athletes who might be at home at Anfield.
Lemar Thomas
Lemar of Atletico Madrid is a player that Anfield officials are all too familiar with. Liverpool and his former club AS Monaco were unable to reach an agreement on a club-record move for the winger back in the summer of 2017, but the Reds may finally have the chance to sign a player they have long been interested in next summer.
Five years ago, Lemar came so close to joining the Premier League with both Liverpool and Arsenal. He finally left the Ligue 1 team in the summer of 2018 and joined Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid for a reported £52 million fee. However, the Frenchman’s career has not reached the heights that it once seemed destined to, and as he approaches the end of his contract year, negotiations for a new contract are said to have halted in Madrid.
Depay, Memphis
Despite his ties to his old club Manchester United, Barcelona striker Depay has also been frequently linked with a move to the red half of Merseyside in recent years.
Depay joined Barcelona from French powerhouse Lyon in the summer of 2021, and he signed a two-year contract at the Nou Camp. Depay had a strong first season, scoring 12 goals in 28 La Liga games, but he appeared to be on the verge of being sold in the summer after the arrival of players like Robert Lewandowski.
Depay appears to check many of the boxes on Liverpool’s scouting list because of his versatility across the most of the forward positions. He’s still only 28, but the Reds might make good use of his hazy Barcelona future by bringing him into the lineup.
Theodore Laimer
Given the recent rumors linking Liverpool to a summer midfielder deal, this is possibly the most plausible candidate on the list. There were rumors that the RB Leipzig player was someone the Anfield officials were very interested in during the end of the transfer window as the Reds lost Thiago Alcantara and Curtis Jones to injuries before losing Jordan Henderson as well.
With the Austrian’s contract expiring on July 1, 2023, and his versatility, Liverpool might look into the idea of bringing him to Anfield the following summer. The fact that Laimer is registered to the same German agency as Naby Keita, Mane, and former striker Taiwo Awoniyi, as well as the club’s positive relationship with the Red Bull institution, further support the Reds’ position.
Michael Asensio
Given the status of the Real Madrid club Asensio is presently a member of, it might be considered a little arrogant. However, as the Spaniard approaches the final year of his present deal, Liverpool would be unwise to ignore a player of his skill.
