Jürgen Klopp’s position at Liverpool is secure. When the time comes to replace him, however, a replacement “better” than Thomas Tuchel has been found
Brighton has defeated Liverpool three times this season and remains unbeaten.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side defeated Liverpool twice in three games, and the manager’s standing has risen dramatically since taking over in mid-September. Former Sassuolo coach De Zerbi has the south coast team playing some fantastic football, and former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol feels De Zerbi might be a contender to succeed Jürgen Klopp if the German coach decides to step down.
Speaking on an ESPN broadcast on ‘who is the best coach for Liverpool if Klopp is terminated at the end of the season?’, Nicol argued that the Italian would be a better choice than Thomas Tuchel. While it is obviously clear that the German will not be relieved of his duties anytime soon, the statements nevertheless provide food for thought.
“There will never be another Klopp,” Nicol remarked. “I tell you what you could do, because you are a major club, go and grab De Zerbi from Brighton.
“On the surface, you seemed surprised that you were succeeding [Graham] Potter. ‘How will you obtain more?’ Yes, because he plays exciting attacking football, I prefer De Zerbi to Tuchel or Mauricio Pochettino.
“I admired Brendan Rodgers’ style of coaching. I just didn’t care for the rest of it. But I enjoyed the way he played the game. And I appreciate how De Zerbi has Brighton set up. It’s astonishing that he’s improved them since Potter was there.”
Again, there is no possibility of dismissal. And it’s unlikely that Klopp will depart on his own, given that the 55-year-old recently admitted that he signed an extension because he believes he can rebuild the team. But, sooner or later, the succession question will have to be addressed, and possibly De Zerbi has put himself on the map.
