Liverpool appear to be on the verge of signing a Manchester United-linked Ajax star after the player admitted his move is ‘getting closer’
Man United have signed several new players in the last year thanks to Erik ten Hag’s connections in the Dutch top flight. Last summer, they signed Antony and Lisandro Martinez from Ajax and Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord.
And this trend could continue in the upcoming transfer window. According to a January report, Ten Hag is interested in three more Ajax players. Jurrien Timber, Kenneth Taylor, and Devyne Rensch were the players in question.
Timber is the most likely of the three players Ten Hag wants to sign. Man United manager Jose Mourinho believes Harry Maguire lacks the ability to perform at a high level and is looking for a new central defender to provide competition and backup for Martinez and Raphael Varane.
Timber would be an excellent addition to the Red Devils’ roster. Timber, despite being only 21 years old, has established himself as one of the most dependable defenders in the Netherlands. He can also play on the right side of defense and has Champions League experience, which makes his signing even more appealing for Manchester United.
Ten Hag, on the other hand, risks losing the player to Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool. On April 18, reports from the Netherlands revealed that Liverpool had surpassed Manchester United in their pursuit of Timber. His girlfriend was even said to be looking for a home in Liverpool.
The 15-cap international opened up about his future in an interview with Dutch publication De Telegraaf (via Fabrizio Romano).
He has revealed that he is ‘getting closer’ to leaving the Johan Cruyff Arena. While he did not specifically mention Liverpool, if previous reports are to be believed, a move to Anfield could be on the cards.
“My transfer is approaching. He declared, “There is a lot of specific interest for the summer.”
“Ajax asked me to renew my contract and stay for another season last summer.” I did it because I care about the club.”
Timber’s contract with Ajax is set to expire in June 2025. However, it will not be enough to keep one of Europe’s biggest sides at bay.
Timber is aware of his high demand and will use it to force a departure from Ajax. While the Dutch outfit would prefer to keep him, they know they will profit handsomely from his sale. It is unknown how much he would cost Liverpool or Manchester United, but transfermarkt values him at €42 million (£37 million).
Timber would be a fantastic signing for Liverpool if they could outbid Ten Hag’s team.
Timber could learn from his countryman Virgil van Dijk. Timber is already better than he was when he was 21 years old, according to the Reds star.
With Van Dijk now 31 years old, Timber could be the ideal replacement in Klopp’s defense. It would be fantastic if Liverpool could pair Timber with Josko Gvardiol in defense in the future, though the latter will come at a hefty price.
