Liverpool may swap Roberto Firmino for Memphis Depay of Barcelona in the January transfer window

Memphis Depay and Roberto Firmino are reportedly being considered by Liverpool and Barcelona for a trade deal, according to Futbol Total through Fanaticos (via The Liverpool Echo).

Firmino joined the Reds in the same summer that Depay relocated to Old Trafford, joining Liverpool in 2015. The former became a significant star for Jurgen Klopp’s team and was crucial to their success, while the latter fell flat.

The Brazilian superstar is not the same player he once was, but he still has a lot to offer. The Reds must begin making preparations to replace him as soon as possible because he will turn 31 in a few days.

Depay has been suggested as a possible January addition, and Klopp and company are eager to recruit another attacker. The Dutchman has slipped down Barcelona’s pecking order and was on the verge of leaving the team earlier this summer.

At Liverpool and Barcelona, respectively, both Firmino and Depay have one year remaining on their contracts. Both clubs would benefit from a swap deal because neither is eager to lose their players for nothing.

As things stand, there haven’t been many chats, negotiations, or discussions between the two sides about the notion, so it hasn’t really taken off. It’s still unclear whether this story is accurate given that the January transfer window is only a few months away.

Firmino had to compete with Darwin Nunez last season after Diogo Jota won the starting XI spot. However, the veteran still has a lot to offer, as he has demonstrated this season.

Depay is undoubtedly a talented player who, if he moves to Merseyside, will benefit Liverpool. To get him, we might not want to risk losing Firmino, though.

Liverpool’s renowned front three is no longer there after Sadio Mane moved to Bayern Munich earlier this year. With the addition of players like Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, and Fabio Carvalho, it might be time to let Firmino go as well. It’s debatable whether Depay is the solution to that.
