Darwin Nunez is set to return for Liverpool’s trip to Manchester City on Saturday, but Naby Keita will miss out

The international break brought both good and bad news for the Reds, as Nunez was ruled out of Uruguay action due to an ankle injury.

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that the problem has been resolved, allowing him to train on Thursday and putting him “back in contention” for the game.

Midfielder Keita, on the other hand, returned from Guinea with a muscle injury, ruling him out of the match against City. “We’ll see how long it takes,” Klopp said.

Luis Diaz is still at least a week away from returning from a long-term injury, with Thiago Alcantara not far behind, as Liverpool face City, Chelsea, and Arsenal in nine days.

The current run of games should serve as a litmus test for whether Klopp’s side can mount a serious challenge to Tottenham and Newcastle for a top-four finish, with the current deficit to Spurs set at seven points with two games remaining.

“It’s like Champions League week,” the Reds manager said. “I’m very excited.

“We are not stupid. We all know that the last game against Real Madrid wasn’t a good game, that the one before that against Bournemouth wasn’t a good game, and that the one before that [against Manchester United] was world class.

“We have to pick up where we left off and respond to the other two games.”
