Konate endured heartbreak in Qatar on Sunday when France fell on penalties to Argentina following a 3-3 stalemate.

After 120 minutes of action, the final will almost certainly be remembered as the best in tournament history.

After Angel Di Maria and Lionel Messi scored in the first half, La Albiceleste appeared to be in perfect control of the game. But, soon after the 80th minute, Kylian Mbappe scored a quick-fire brace to force extra time.

Didier Deschamps unexpectedly demoted Konate to the bench following a great performance against Morocco in the semi-final. The 23-year-old came on for the final seven minutes of extra time, just as Messi thought he had won it for Lionel Scaloni’s side.

Mbappe, on the other hand, forced a penalty shootout after converting his second spot-kick of the game. Unfortunately for Konate, Argentina went on to win the championship.

Following Sunday’s defeat, Konate took to social media, and Cunha responded beneath the post to offer his support.

Cunha communicates with Konate.

“All big victories were preceded by several great failures,” the Liverpool defender said beside a photo of himself strolling past the World Cup trophy.

Marcus Thuram and his France teammates swarmed beneath the post to show their support.

He also got a message from ex-Liverpool player Mamadou Sakho, who said, “Heads up, proud of you.”

Atletico striker Cunha responded, “Ibuuuuuu I love you,” with a heart and raised hands emoji.

Cunha has recently been linked with a move to the Premier League as he prepares to depart Diego Simeone’s side in January.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Leeds United, and Aston Villa have all been mentioned as potential destinations for the £22 million striker.

After falling down the pecking order under Simeone, he may have to face Konate on a frequent basis in the future.

Konate started three World Cup games and was competing for a starting spot with Dayot Upamecano. He played excellently in the semi-finals and will be frustrated that he did not make the French team on Sunday.
