Graeme Souness, a Liverpool veteran, has lauded two players he believes will be a “big asset” to Jurgen Klopp
Graeme Souness has lauded Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez of Liverpool for their recent form.
Both Reds attackers scored two goals in last week’s 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United. Gakpo now has four goals in four games since joining Liverpool, while Nunez now has 14 for the season.
Gakpo joined Liverpool in the January transfer window and will cost at least £40 million with add-ons. Nunez was heavily chastised in certain areas following his £64.1 million plus a potential £21.3 million in add-ons move from Benfica in the summer.
Yet, after seeing the duo contribute to Liverpool’s biggest-ever triumph over Manchester United, Souness was impressed. The Reds great feels that the pair’s performances will help launch their careers at Anfield.
“I don’t want United’s incompetence to cloud my judgment of a Liverpool team that performed exceptionally well,” Souness told the Mail Online. “Cody Gakpo appeared to be a Liverpool player. This should be the impetus for him to say, ‘I belong at this level’.
“The same is true for Darwin Nunez. He’ll receive three, four, or five opportunities every game, and while he’ll miss some and have off days, he’ll also convert a bunch.
“That’s exactly the type of player he is – big, quick, brave, and he’s smart. Nobody enjoys playing against him, in my opinion. He’s going to be a huge help.”
