Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has given Jurgen Klopp a note on the team’s lineup
Steve Nicol, a former Liverpool player, has urged Jurgen Klopp to start playing Darwin Nunez more frequently.
During the summer transfer window, the Reds acquired Nunez from Benfica in a transaction that could have cost up to £85.5 million with add-ons. The signing of the 23-year-old would set a new club record for Liverpool if all add-ons are satisfied.
Nunez has made six appearances in a Liverpool jersey and has scored twice thus far. The only blot on his Reds career was the red card he received in his debut game at Anfield against Crystal Palace.
Former Liverpool defender Nicol has urged Klopp to give Nunez more opportunities to start. Nicol continued by outlining why the summer acquisition is superior to players like Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino.
According to Nicol, “the first thing I did when I saw the team was checking the substitutes to see if Nunez had picked up an injury.”
“You won’t get the best performance out of him until you bring him in, give him playing time, and contact him used to everyone.
“As we are all aware, he is not the finished product; he is very raw, but what he contributes is entirely different from what Jota and Firmino can offer; he gives you the two things they are unable to accomplish.
“Firmino is about possession; if you can get him holding the ball up and playing with Diaz and Salah that Firmino – I think he can do it – he just needs to improve at it and he can score goals because that’s pretty much what Jota is there for.
“I don’t think he does especially well when it comes to link-up play or holding the ball up. He’s the small man in the penalty box that’s intended to spring up and put the ball in the net.
“You put him on the field where he can communicate with everyone. Most of the time during the week, if I were a defender, I would much rather play against Jota or Firmino than him.
“This player won’t improve until he gets playing time. Get him on because I don’t think the other two are especially smart.
