Thierry Henry believes Raheem Sterling’s goal for Chelsea in the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night was inspired by his time at Liverpool
Chelsea’s Graham Potter secured their place in the next round of the Champions League by defeating Dortmund 2-0 in the second leg, following the German club’s 1-0 victory in the first game.
Chelsea started quickly, with Sterling running through on goal, and even though he didn’t realize he was offside, he just didn’t shoot on goal before being shut down, demonstrating his lack of confidence and this goal-shy club.
But when Sterling did find the back of the goal, it wasn’t nice, but it was much needed.
When the ball was thrown across the box, he swung at nothing before regaining control of the ball, pushing it past an opposing player, and shooting the ball into the back of the net from inside the congested box.
Arsenal star Thierry Henry told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (07/03/23 at 10:20 pm) that all three phases of Sterling’s finish reminded him of Liverpool, Manchester City, and Chelsea.
“Let’s be honest, the initial ball contact isn’t terrific,” Henry added. “That’s a little of chance following when he does dribble and receive the bounce, the lucky bounce, shall I say? Then he completes it.”
“I think you described it extremely well off-air,” Jamie Carragher continued. einsteineruploading up to get together with.
“The first one was when he was in Liverpool,” Henry explained. The way he finished it, then a bit of Manchester City (the dribble), and now he’s at Chelsea, and he finished it.”
STRUGGLES OF STERLING
The 28-year-old decided to leave Manchester City in the summer to begin a new chapter in his career, and he achieved a £49 million transfer to Stamford Bridge (BBC Sport).
It’s fair to say that life has been difficult for the England star, but he’s not alone in West London.
Sterling has only four Premier League goals in 18 Premier League games, but he has three in the Champions League, and his recent goal will give him the boost he needs.
