Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on a deal to recruit Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet and have agreed personal terms with the defender, according to Sport in Spain.
Last summer, the 28-year-old joined the North London club on a season-long loan from Barcelona. Despite having a difficult debut season in England, the centre-back managed to make 35 appearances across all competitions.
Tottenham appear to have been sufficiently pleased with Lenglet‘s efforts last season, as they are apparently in discussions with Barcelona to finalise a permanent contract this summer.
Tottenham have agreed personal terms on a three-year agreement to bring Lenglet back to the freshly refurbished White Hart Lane, according to Sport.
According to the source, Spurs are attempting to strike a deal with Barcelona to sign the former Sevilla player, with a cost of roughly £9 million [€10 million] plus add-ons being negotiated between the two clubs.
Tottenham to Lenglet
According to Sport, Barcelona is in financial trouble and has to sell some of their players to balance the books, thus the Catalan powerhouse is ready to cash in on Lenglet this summer.
Spurs appear to have prioritized improving their backline ahead of next season after struggling with defensive troubles last season.
Several players, including Edmond Tapsoba, Micky van de Ven, and Harry Maguire, have been connected with a move to the Lilywhites in recent months.
However, it appears that they are also interested in acquiring Lenglet on a permanent basis, so it remains to be seen how many defenders Tottenham decides to buy this summer in order to remedy their defensive frailties.
The Frenchman is at ease playing out of the back, is good in the air, reads the game well, and makes effective defensive contributions, so he has the makings of a quality performance.
If Spurs sign him on a permanent deal this summer, the 28-year-old might be a beneficial addition to
‘s side, although Spurs supporters will be hoping for at least one more centre-back signing in the coming weeks.
