Wilt Chamberlain Nearly Returned to the NBA at 50

Wilt Chamberlain, one of the most dominant players in NBA history, nearly made an unprecedented return to professional basketball long after his retirement. Despite stepping away from the game in 1973, multiple NBA teams attempted to lure him back—even offering contracts when he was nearly 50 years old.

A Legend’s Retirement and Ongoing Interest

When Chamberlain retired, he was the NBA’s all-time leader in points and rebounds in a game, season, and career. His dominance was unparalleled, and teams recognized that even in his later years, he could still be a force. Over the next two decades, numerous franchises—including the Cavaliers, Bulls, Nets, Knicks, Sixers, Mavericks, Suns, and Clippers—tried to convince him to return.

One of the most bizarre recruitment attempts came in 1979, when the Cleveland Cavaliers were in serious discussions with Chamberlain. However, their approach was unorthodox: the team’s general manager left a contract offer stuck in the fence at Wilt’s home while he was away. By the time Chamberlain returned, the pages had been scattered across his lawn by the wind, and the opportunity was lost.

A Tempting Offer at Age 49

Perhaps the closest Wilt came to an NBA return was in 1986, when the New Jersey Nets offered him a $362,000 contract to play the final seven games of the season and the playoffs. This move, reported by the LA Times, would have been one of the most remarkable comebacks in sports history. However, Chamberlain ultimately declined.

Wilt’s Confidence in His Abilities

Even in retirement, Chamberlain remained convinced he could dominate. In his book A View From Above, he claimed that even in his 40s, he would have led the league in rebounding:

“There is no doubt in my mind I would have led the league in rebounding. It’s not even a question.”

Chamberlain’s athleticism and strength were legendary, and many believe that, had he returned, he could have made a significant impact—even at an advanced age.

A “What If” That Lives on in NBA History

Though Chamberlain never officially un-retired, his near-comeback remains one of the most fascinating “what ifs” in NBA history. His dominance, confidence, and physical ability made him a once-in-a-lifetime player, and teams were willing to bet that even at 50, he could still be great.
