Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw by Aston Villa, but a goal was ruled out after a VAR review
Richard Keys was perplexed when Cody Gakpo’s goal against Aston Villa was ruled out.
The Reds were held to a 1-1 draw, putting their Premier League top-four hopes in jeopardy. In the first half, Villa’s Jacob Ramsey scored before Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino came off the bench to save a point on his final Anfield appearance before leaving this summer.
However, 10 minutes into the second half, Jurgen Klopp’s side were denied an equalizer. Gakpo scored from close range after a goalmouth scramble, but before VAR could intervene. Referee John Brooks reviewed the incident on the pitch-side monitor and determined that, while the ball struck Villa defender Enzi Konsa, he did not intentionally play it.
Many people were taken aback by the decision, including former Sky Sports presenter Keys. “I’ve just watched VAR disallow a Liverpool goal and have no idea why,” he tweeted. Offside, we’re told. No. Wait until you see it, Howard Webb has Klopp’s phone number. He’s going to require it.
“If the law was correctly interpreted to disallow Gakpo’s goal, how come [Crystal] Palace’s equalizer at Fulham was allowed to stand?” When the ball is deflected to [Joe] Ward, he is offside.”
Klopp revealed that he discussed the decision with Brooks after the final whistle. “I asked the ref why the offside goal was offside because offside situations should be clear,” Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said.He stated that it was a personal choice.
“He believes it is not a deliberate action by the defender, but I believe it is.” And I believe the VAR was unsure. So he might have thought it was possible. In the end, it’s a personal choice. That is beyond dispute. He did it, and that’s all there is to it.”
With Liverpool’s draw against Villa, third-placed Newcastle United and fourth-placed Manchester United need only a point in their final two games to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
The Reds close out the 2023-24 season with a trip to relegated Southampton.
