Sepp van den Berg, a Liverpool loanee, posted a farewell message to Schalke 04 a few days ago
The 21-year-old was loaned to the Bundesliga side at the start of the season and will return to the Reds this summer after making ten appearances there.
However, according to Voetbal International, Schalke sporting director André Hechelmann has revealed that negotiations for a new contract with Liverpool are underway.
“We are talking to him and his advisor,” he said, adding that the Instagram post does not reveal much about the player’s future.
“I see the post as more of a thank you note from Sepp.”
Van den Berg is unlikely to see much playing time at Liverpool next season, which is why Schalke are hoping to keep him for another year, especially since he has fully adapted to the German club.
In 2019, Liverpool paid €1.9 million to sign the defender from PEC Zwolle in the Netherlands. He made four appearances for the Reds before being loaned out. He was loaned to Preston North End for the remainder of the 2021/22 season before moving to the Bundesliga.
He signed a contract extension with the Reds until 2026 before leaving for Schalke, so he’s well protected if he leaves again this summer.
