Vikings and Kevin O’Connell sign massive multi-year extension

Following the sad conclusion to the Minnesota Vikings season, the team has decided on the future of head coach Kevin O’Connell. The coach was rumored to be traded to a different team, but this will not be the case

According to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, the #Vikings and coach Kevin O’Connell have reached an agreement on a multi-year contract extension, sources tell me and RapSheet. This was Minnesota’s top goal, and discussions began immediately following the season. O’Connell is still 39 years old and shows no signs of slowing down. O’Connell will remain in Minnesota, attempting to guide the squad to another great season in 2025.

O’Connell has been key in bringing the Vikings organization around since taking CEO in 2022. After serving as offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams for two seasons, he took over as head coach in Minnesota. Behind O’Connell, the Vikings finished 13-4 in 2022 but were eliminated in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs.

O’Connell and the Vikings would have a sophomore slump, finishing 7-10 in 2023. However, they responded with a 14-3 record in 2024. Unfortunately, the Vikings would fall again in the Wild Card Round.

The Vikings emerged as a power in 2024, thanks to Sam Darnold’s stunning return. O’Connell was mentioned as a trade prospect this winter, but the management will not let the 39-year-old superstar leave.

The Vikings will need to retool to contend again in 2025, and the greatest question is whether they intend to resign Darnold. The team did draft J.J. McCarthy to replace Kirk Cousins, but he tore his ACL in preseason.

It will be intriguing to watch if McCarthy takes over as starting this time around, and if Darnold is given a new contract deal. Regardless of the decision, the starting quarterback will have O’Connell returning to guide them.

The Vikings have issued an official statement regarding the O’Connell extension, which states:

“Kevin is exactly who we believed him to be when we named him as our head coach – an innovative play caller, an excellent communicator and a strong leader who motivates and connects with his players,” Mark Wilf, the Vikings owner and president, told reporters. “He has helped establish a culture that positions us for sustained success, and he will continue to set the standard we need as we pursue a championship for Vikings fans.”

O’Connell also discussed the agreement and expressed his optimism about his future with the Vikings.

“I never take this important position for granted, and I’d like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to the Wilf family for their steadfast belief in what we’re creating together. I’d also like to thank Leah and our wonderful children; their love and support enable me to do an excellent job,” O’Connell stated. “None of this would be possible without the commitment of our coaches, players, and support staff. I can’t wait to return to work with everyone as we strive to raise the bar and foster a great environment.

“To Vikings fans, you are the best in the NFL,” O’Connell said. “There is no greater delight than guiding our squad in front of you every Sunday and enjoying the home-field advantage you provide. I’m excited for the years ahead.”
