Ange Postecoglou should give Lucá Williams-Barnett the opportunity to train with Tottenham’s first team
Tottenham’s Under-18s have had a rocky start to the season.
Stuart Lewis’ team has played in several high-scoring games, including a 5-1, a 6-4, and, most recently, an exciting 3-3 draw with Southampton’s Under-18s on Saturday (September 21).
Williams-Barnett has been one of their star players amidst all of the drama, scoring again in the draw with the Saints.
Williams-Barnett extended Spurs’ lead after Tynan Thompson had put them ahead, and Herbie James put the North London club back ahead late on after Southampton had scored twice to pull level.
Spurs were denied a victory after the hosts scored a late goal. Postecoglou, on the other hand, will undoubtedly have been impressed with Williams-Barnett’s performances.
Ange Postecoglou to give Lucá Williams-Barnett a first-team shot at Tottenham?
In addition to his goal, Williams-Barnett missed a penalty against the Saints, which will undoubtedly frustrate the 16-year-old.
Nonetheless, this should not detract from the forward’s continued strong performance.
At that age, players are likely to make mistakes and miss penalties; this is typical. However, it is unusual for a 16-year-old to fit in so well in his first full season of Under-18 football.
But that is exactly what Williams-Barnett has done. This season, the kid has started all five Under-18 Premier League games for Tottenham, scoring five goals and assisting twice.
Mikey Moore was putting up figures at that level, and the 17-year-old is now firmly on the first-team radar at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with a new contract being discussed for the forward.
As a result, Postecoglou should take a closer look at Williams-Barnett. To do this, the Australian may give the player an opportunity to train with the first team.
With an international break coming up in October and several first-team players expected to be away, Williams-Barnett might take advantage of the opportunity to spend time with the first team and show Postecoglou what he is capable of.
