Undrafted? No Problem. RJ Davis Lands with the Lakers to Begin His NBA Journey đź’śđź’›
After five stellar seasons at North Carolina, RJ Davis’ name surprisingly went uncalled during the 2025 NBA Draft. But just hours later, Davis was handed an opportunity too good to pass up a deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the league’s most storied franchises.
Davis, who became a Consensus All-American during his fifth year in Chapel Hill, averaged 21.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in the 2023-24 season. He was not only the face of the Tar Heels but one of the most experienced and decorated players in college basketball.
Now, he’s heading to the West Coast with something to prove.
“Source: RJ Davis, former UNC star, has agreed to a contract with the Lakers,” reported Billy Reinhardt via X.
While the terms of the deal weren’t immediately disclosed, it’s expected Davis will participate in Summer League with a chance to fight for a roster spot or two-way contract. Given the Lakers’ recent focus on youth and development, Davis may find the perfect system to grow in.
From March Madness Hero to Hollywood Hopeful
Tar Heel fans will never forget Davis’ clutch moments. During North Carolina’s magical 2022 NCAA Tournament run, Davis played a pivotal role in sending legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski into retirement with a Final Four upset victory. Though the Heels fell just short in the title game against Kansas, Davis’ poise under pressure left a lasting impression.
And now, he’s not alone in LA.
The Lakers also signed Arthur Kaluma, a talented forward who played at Creighton, Kansas State, and Texas during his four-year college career. Kaluma averaged 12.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game across his NCAA tenure and brings physicality and versatility to a Lakers team looking for frontcourt depth.
The Road Ahead
The pairing of Davis and Kaluma in purple and gold gives the Lakers two highly experienced collegiate players who can contribute immediately in the G League and potentially push for NBA rotation minutes. Davis’ leadership, sharpshooting, and court vision will be tested, but he’s faced adversity before and always responded with greatness.
For Davis, the NBA journey begins not with a call on draft night but with a contract forged by belief, work ethic, and undeniable skill.
From Chapel Hill to Hollywood, RJ Davis is ready for the moment.
