UNC Basketball is the latest to offer Class of 2027 combo guard King Gibson.

UNC Extends Offer to Another Elite 2027 Guard with North Carolina Roots

Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball staff have added another rising star to their 2027 recruiting radar.

Just days after offering in-state guard LJ Smith, the Tar Heels made things official with King Gibson, a highly-rated 6-foot-4 combo guard out of Montverde Academy in Florida. Ranked No. 14 overall in the Class of 2027 by the 247Sports Composite, Gibson becomes the second five-star backcourt player from the class to receive a UNC offer.

Though now playing his high school ball in Florida, Gibson is originally from Greensboro, North Carolina, giving the Tar Heels another in-state connection to lean on in this recruitment. He already holds offers from top programs like Alabama, Missouri, Florida State, NC State, Georgetown, and Wake Forest, among others.

Recruiting analyst Jamie Shaw of On3 recently had high praise for Gibson, noting the young guard’s maturity and poise well beyond his years:

“You would never know that Gibson was just a sophomore watching him play. The 6-foot-5 guard plays with a pace and a poise that tells you he is not afraid of the moment.”

Gibson is the definition of a versatile backcourt piece—capable of running the offense like a point guard, while also scoring and stretching the floor like a shooting guard. His blend of size, skill, and basketball IQ makes him a prime target for a North Carolina team that continues to focus on bolstering its guard depth for the future.

UNC’s early moves in the 2027 class, especially with players who have in-state ties, show that the program is intent on keeping top talent within reach—especially with other North Carolina-based schools also pushing hard for the state’s top players.

While most of the Tar Heels’ recruiting focus remains on the 2026 cycle for now, expect more 2027 offers to emerge in the coming months as Hubert Davis and his staff build toward the long-term future of Tar Heel basketball.
