Tottenham Hotspur are stepping up their game this summer.
The north London club is poised to complete a deal for James Maddison, and it now looks that defensive reinforcements are on the way.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Spurs are going to make a verbal offer to Wolfsburg for Micky van de Ven.
Spurs will make an initial offer to sign the Dutchman, and it is one that they should be quite thrilled about.
Ange Postecoglou like defenders who can play a high line while still being comfortable with the ball, and Van De Ven checks both boxes.
Indeed, the Dutchman is one of today’s quickest defenders. He’s registered a high speed of 35.97 km/h in the Bundesliga this season, which puts him just ahead of Kyle Walker, who is widely regarded as one of the game’s fastest players.
Van De Ven possesses the speed to succeed in Postecoglou’s system, but more importantly, he has the ability.
He reads the game beautifully, and while his passing out from the back needs work, he’s closer to being a ball-playing defender than any of the Spurs’ present choices.
Spurs have already patched two of their issue areas, with Maddison due to join soon and Guglielmo Vicario already through the door, and if Van De Ven signs, they might cross off another priority acquisition.
Of course, this is Tottenham Hotspur, so getting a deal done is often easier said than done, but with Van De Ven reportedly willing to join as well, don’t be shocked if this one goes through in the coming weeks.
