Tottenham Hotspur have had a busy summer in terms of transfers, and they don’t appear to be done yet
Spurs have signed Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison, and Manor Solomon so far.
In addition, speculations are circulating that Tottenham is close to signing Micky van de Ven.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Spurs and Wolfsburg are nearing an agreement on the defender.
Even better, Van de Ven may not be the only new addition Tottenham is considering.
Spurs are expected to conclude a deal for Blackburn Rovers’ Ashley Phillips this weekend, according to The Athletic.
Adam Leventhal tweeted an update, which included a link to the article on The Athletic’s website.
ottenham have matched the 18-year-old’s £2 million release clause, and the window for additional bidders closes on Friday.
As a result, unless someone else steps in, the deal is expected to be completed over the weekend.
The Spurs felt they had a deal in place a few weeks ago, even organizing a medical.
However, Blackburn has reportedly raised their asking price to £5 million plus £4.5 million in add-ons.
According to the article, the two parties appear to be close to striking a deal.
‘He’s a fascinating prospect.’
Former Rovers manager Tony Mowbray praised Phillips when he was just 16 years old.
“He’s 6ft 4in, he’s fast, mobile, and can pass it really well,” he told Lancashire Live when asked what makes him such an enticing talent.
“He’s composed and can use both feet.” Ash is a fantastic young man; if you were to design a defender from scratch, this youngster would fit the bill perfectly.
“But he’s still a young boy.” He needs time, which is why he’s training with the first squad to gain confidence and get adjusted to the environment.
“But because it’s a position with a lot of responsibility, it’s not as easy to put a really talented young defender in as it is to put a talented young striker in where it doesn’t matter if he loses the ball every now and then.”
“As a defender, you’re graded on your ability to keep the ball out of the net and win individual duels. He is only a boy, but he has some incredible qualities. We have strong expectations that he will make rapid progress.”
In our opinion
It’s encouraging to see Tottenham close to overcoming the obstacles that have supposedly stymied this transfer.
Phillips is an exceptional talent with a lot of potential, having already played professional football with Blackburn Rovers.
Let us wait and watch what occurs in the next days. Hopefully, he and Van de Ven will be announced by the Spurs soon.
