Liverpool and Newcastle have gained a minor boost in their pursuit of Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez
According to O Jogo in Portugal, Jürgen Klopp is interested in signing the Argentina international.
The Daily Mail also reported that Newcastle want to sign Fernandez.
Benfica dispelled speculation about his departure earlier this week by issuing an official statement about him, indicating that he would stay until at least the end of the season.
Now, Benfica manager Roger Schmidt has added gasoline to the flames.
WHAT’S THE DEAL?
The 55-year-old, however, refused to confirm whether Friday’s 3-0 defeat to Braga would be Fernandez’s final game at Benfica.
“I don’t know if this was Enzo’s last match, he’s a wonderful player,” Schmidt stated, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano. Things happen in football and players must make decisions. We’ll see what occurs in the coming weeks.”
Many did not expect the 21-year-old to start against Braga last night, despite his World Cup achievements for Argentina.
Fernandez, on the other hand, is a crucial player for Benfica and Schmidt, therefore he was called upon despite O Jogo suggesting that he might sit out against Braga to avoid an injury, which could jeopardize a transfer.
The Argentine’s contract includes a release clause for €120 million (£105 million), to which Benfica is directing interested parties; they appear to have no wish to accept anything less.

TO ENZO FERNANDEZ, NEWCASTLE COULD BEAT LIVERPOOL.
Newcastle could soon reach the £105 million release clause, according to A Bola in Portugal.
According to the Portuguese news outlet, Benfica is concerned about the Magpies throwing their money around this winter and activating their No.13’s release clause.
Newcastle can surely afford to pay that amount because to Saudi Arabian sponsorship, although Liverpool are not as financially powerful.
Keep a watch on this scenario, since Schmidt’s words have given new life to the saga.
