Few could’ve imagined how pivotal this day would become for UNC basketball.
Feeling old yet? It’s been 21 years since Tyler Hansbrough chose the University of North Carolina.
A five-star recruit from Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Hansbrough was one of the nation’s top 10 prospects in the Class of 2005, ranked No. 7 by 247Sports. He brought his talents to Chapel Hill to play for Roy Williams—but no one could have predicted just how legendary his career would be.
Nicknamed “Psycho T,” Hansbrough rewrote the record books. He remains the ACC’s all-time leading scorer, was a four-time All-American and All-ACC first-team selection, won the 2008 National Player of the Year Award, and led the Tar Heels to the 2009 NCAA Championship. He set Division I records for made free throws (982) and averaged 20.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per game in NCAA tournament play.
And perhaps his favorite stat? Duke never beat UNC in Durham during his time in Chapel Hill—a fact that still makes Tar Heel fans smile.
His dominance was so complete that many jokingly dubbed Cameron Indoor “Hansbrough Indoor Stadium” during his run.

When programs sign elite recruits, they hope for greatness. With Hansbrough, UNC got more than they could have dreamed. His No. 50 now hangs forever in the rafters of the Dean Smith Center—a fitting tribute to a player who became one of the greatest to ever wear Carolina Blue.
And to think… it all started with his commitment, 21 years ago today.
