Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven has said that he is aware of Liverpool’s interest in him in the past.

The 22-year-old has emerged as a possible candidate for Liverpool’s new center-back position. According to earlier this month’s reports, the Reds are eager to begin negotiations with Wolfsburg about a deal.

With this in mind, Dutch publication Voetbal International questioned Van de Ven about his ties to Liverpool.

“Of course, I’ve heard that as well. But, as I already stated, the media wants something to talk about,” remarked the Netherlands U21 star. “Of course, there are some who draw lines. True, the director [Jorg Schmadtke] went there, and I know Liverpool had previously followed me. But I don’t know anything right now. Is Liverpool a fantastic club in my opinion? Without a doubt!

“If there is a good club with a clear plan for me, I might consider taking a step.” In that way, you are receptive to it. There’s a chance I’ll stay in the Bundesliga after this summer, but there’s also a chance I’ll make a move. We’ll see what happens. Let us first complete this season.”

Liverpool is thinking about van de Ven.
Before considering a new defensive signing, Liverpool must first address their midfield issues. However, once it is completed, the focus should shift to strengthening the defense.

Jurgen Klopp does not appear to be particularly short on paper. In terms of numbers, Liverpool has two obvious first-choice options in Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, with Joel Matip and Joe Gomez providing solid reserves.

Surprisingly, Nat Phillips remains at the club, and Sepp van den Berg may yet have a chance to make the first squad.
But look deeper, and the need for new blood becomes evident. Both Matip and Van Dijk will be 32 this summer, with the former’s contract expiring in a year.

Gomez’s level hasn’t been good enough for a time, and Konate has had injury problems. It’s time to bring in another.

As things stand, Van de Ven appears to be the most likely choice. He’s definitely aware of the Reds’ interest, and the Schmadtke connection cannot be overlooked.

He’d arrived with great expectations, having been described as a player with ‘tremendous potential’ by Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schafer back in March. Van de Ven’s star is rising. Liverpool will be keeping a close eye on him as he improves.
