Ohio State will play Notre Dame in the College Football Championship Game, which will not include an SEC school for the second year in a row. The growing parity in college football, which has been noticeable in the last two playoff seasons, has eclipsed the SEC after it dominated the title from 2016 to 2023.
Even though college football has evolved, many fans still remember the SEC’s strong teams from the preceding ten years. Each week, programs like Georgia and Alabama captivated fans throughout the country with their intensely divisive presence.
Greg McElroy, a former Alabama player and college football broadcaster, discussed the underappreciated significance of college football super teams as the title game drew near on January 18 at the 11th Annual Allstate Party at the Playoff.
According to McElroy, “I do believe that parity is valuable as long as we acknowledge having the ‘Death Star,’ if you will, is still of importance.” “You better feel something for that team at the end of that run, but we need that divisive program that everyone either loves or hates.”
As an Alabama fan, I can say that while many people want to see Alabama lose, there are also those that are in favor of the state. And given our current state as a sport, I believe that will be beneficial in the long run,” he continued.
McElroy’s allusion to the “Death Star” team is consistent with Nick Saban’s Alabama teams, which won six national titles in 11 years between 2010 and 2020. In his first season as a starter, McElroy, who was a quarterback for Alabama, guided the team to an undefeated record and a national championship in 2009–10.
McElroy enjoys the existence of elite teams, but he also recognizes how a program like Notre Dame, which isn’t as renowned for having as much quality as the SEC teams, has made it to the title game.
McElroy said, “We just want the most reliable teams to win the championship.” “I believe that consistency is somewhat rewarded by this system, and we ought to celebrate that.” Notre Dame may be the best team at the moment, but I don’t think they have the most talent. And I believe that almost everyone who watches the sport celebrates that.
