South Carolina Coach Shares Strong Dawn Staley Statement on Sunday

“One of One”: South Carolina’s Lisa Boyer Honors Dawn Staley with Powerful Birthday Tribute

As the confetti settles on another unforgettable NCAA Tournament run, South Carolina’s women’s basketball program finds itself in a familiar position: praised, respected, and led by a living legend. Dawn Staley, the heart and architect of the Gamecocks’ dynasty, recently turned 55—and was met with a heartfelt message that reminded everyone just how special she truly is.

South Carolina’s associate head coach Lisa Boyer, Staley’s longtime right hand and trusted confidant, didn’t hold back when she took to social media to honor the birthday of the woman many simply call “Coach.” But to Boyer—and to those who’ve worked beside her, played for her, or been changed by her leadership—Dawn Staley is something more.

“It’s time to wish our best girl @dawnstaley a VERY VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!” Boyer wrote in a touching X (formerly Twitter) post. “Many know her as ‘Coach’ but she is an incredible human being. ONE OF ONE!!! Love me some Dawnnie:):) Enjoy your day my friend.”

That phrase—“one of one”—isn’t just birthday praise. It’s a reflection of Staley’s singular impact on the sport, the players she’s mentored, and the culture she’s built in Columbia since taking the reins in 2008. From her early days with the Gamecocks to now, Staley has turned South Carolina into a juggernaut. Her resume glistens: three national titles, seven Final Four appearances, nine SEC regular-season championships, and nine SEC Tournament crowns.

This past season, Staley’s Gamecocks stormed through the NCAA Tournament, defeating Tennessee Tech, Indiana, Maryland, Duke, and Texas to reach the national title game. Though they fell short against UConn, the journey cemented another remarkable campaign under her leadership.

Lisa Boyer has been by Staley’s side nearly every step of the way. Joining the South Carolina staff in 2008, Boyer was promoted to associate head coach in 2010. Her coaching career spans decades, with stints at Virginia Tech, Davidson, Miami, East Carolina, and more, but it’s her partnership with Staley that has defined her legacy.

Together, they’ve changed the game—on and off the court. And in moments like these, it’s clear that behind the championship banners, the national accolades, and the packed arenas lies something even more powerful: genuine respect, deep friendship, and a bond forged through years of building something extraordinary.

Happy Birthday, Coach Staley. The legacy continues—and so does the love.
