This season has been a disaster for Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp
Following his achievements for Morocco at last year’s World Cup, Liverpool transfer target Sofyan Amrabat might be set for a big deadline day move from Fiorentina to Barcelona. The Reds have been linked with the ace this month as manager Jurgen Klopp looks to address his team’s on-field troubles following a poor run of play.
Amrabat was born in the Netherlands and attended the Utrecht academy before joining Feyenoord in 2017. He went on to play for Club Brugge and Verona before signing a contract with Fiorentina in 2020. He has also made 83 appearances with his current employers.
Amrabat chose to play for Morocco at the international level, and he was a key figure as his side beat the odds to reach the World Cup semi-finals before falling to eventual victors France. The 26-year-old midfielder played every minute of every match in Qatar, where he established himself against a slew of renowned players.
A move to the Premier League appeared to be on the cards, with Klopp showing interest in the ace after his outstanding achievements for his country. However, according to journalist Gerard Romero, Barcelona will now try to get Amrabat before the transfer deadline on Tuesday. However, the transfer would only be a loan until the end of the season, with the Catalan giants having no opportunity to buy him in the summer.
According to the Daily Mail, Barcelona and Amrabat have both consented to the deal, with Fiorentina now deciding whether or not to proceed. Barcelona boss Xavi is eager to finalize the deal because it would provide him with another midfield option to fight with 34-year-old legendary Spain great Sergi Busquets, who is in the final year of his contract at the Nou Camp.
If Fiorentina agrees to the transfer, Amrabat will become Barcelona’s first signing of the January window. Barca has been constrained in the market due to Financial Fair Play restrictions, and they were notified last week that they couldn’t register the new contracts of Gavi and Ronald Araujo.
Earlier this month, it was claimed that Klopp spoke with Amrabat’s representatives in an attempt to persuade the midfielder to join Liverpool. However, the German attempt failed because Amrabat eventually opted to pursue other alternatives.
Tottenham were linked with the ace a year ago as Antonio Conte desperately sought new faces two months after taking over as Spurs manager. Instead, the Italian signed Juventus midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.
