Calls for Jordan Henderson, the captain of Liverpool, to succeed Gareth Southgate as England manager for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar have been described by Chris Sutton as “bonkers,” according to 606

Southgate is under intense pressure, and the fact that they lost 1-0 on Friday night in the UEFA Nations League in Italy didn’t help matters.

As a result, some supporters are clamoring for Southgate to be fired before the team departs for Qatar. Southgate led the Three Lions to semi-final appearances at the 2018 World Cup and the Euro 2020 finals.

Well, it’s fair to say that former Premier League champion Sutton was perplexed when an England supporter proposed Liverpool midfielder Henderson take over since he knows the players and can bring the team together quickly.

Henderson has no prior managerial experience, but has the 32-year-old even completed his badges? It’s arguably one of the strangest responses to Southgate’s England’s recent troubles.

Sutton, though, responded to that call in the manner described above, even making the jest that, while they were at it, they might as well hand Tottenham striker Harry Kane the keys to the dugout.

Who has absolutely no managerial experience, Sutton remarked. But do you believe Jordan Henderson would perform better than a player who has previously led us to a World Cup semifinal?

“But do you believe he (Southgate) is going to take us to this semi-final (in Qatar),” the England supporter retorted.

I believe he has a better chance than Jordan Henderson, but I must admit that I am a little taken aback by the switch, said Sutton. Jordan Henderson is one name I didn’t anticipate as the England World Cup manager or potential England manager!

“I mean, that’s really unexpected. Why don’t we give Harry Kane the ball instead of Jordan Henderson—that is really out of left field. This is insane. Did he really just say that? I would run around naked in Norfolk if that happened.

There are some crazy opinions, but this one has to be at the top of the list of all the crazy ideas.

Yes, Southgate is under scrutiny and he is justifiably being questioned, and the team’s performance has decreased since they reached the Euro 2020 final.

The fact that Southgate has access to so much talent yet still can’t make England appear appealing doesn’t help his situation.

Then there’s the problem of his sticking up for way too many underperforming players and choosing ones who barely play at club level.

In any case, Southgate will likely struggle to survive if England is eliminated from the Qatar World Cup early.
