The long-running feud between Paul Tierney and Jurgen Klopp reached new heights on Sunday during Liverpool’s 4-3 win over Tottenham, sparking a debate about whether the referee should be removed from the Reds’ matches

After another spat between the Premier League referee and Jurgen Klopp, John Aldridge has questioned whether Paul Tierney should be barred from officiating Liverpool games.

Tierney was shown a yellow card by Klopp in the final few minutes of Sunday’s rollercoaster 4-3 win over Tottenham at home. When Diogo Jota snatched all three points in the 94th minute, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp celebrated wildly in front of fourth official John Brooks. Klopp was furious after the game, claiming that what Tierney said to him as he booked the German wasn’t “okay.”

The FA has launched an investigation into the incident and is reviewing audio of the pair’s conversation, which the PGMOL – the body in charge of top-flight referees – has already declared shows Tierney “acted in a professional manner.” Meanwhile, Klopp has been chastised for his “unacceptable” behavior, as attention returns to his long-running feud with Tierney and the Reds manager’s continued on-field antics. But club legend Aldridge appears to sympathize with him.

In his column for the Liverpool Echo, Aldridge complained about a series of calls that enraged Klopp during Sunday’s back-and-forth: “I couldn’t believe some of Paul Tierney’s decisions.” It is well known that we have had issues in matches involving Tierney in the past.

“I don’t know what the solution is with Tierney, in terms of whether he could be taken off our games for the time being,” the former Liverpool striker added. Liverpool could file a complaint, but I’m not sure how far that would go. Jurgen doesn’t usually say things like that after a game, so is there a reason for him to be so emotional about it?”

“We have our history with Tierney, I really don’t know what he has against us,” Klopp said after the last-gasp victory, when asked about the decisions in question by Sky Sports. He has stated that there are no problems, but this cannot be correct. I’m not sure how he looks at me.

“In England, nobody has to clarify these situations because they are extremely complicated and difficult to comprehend.” “It’s not okay what he said to me when he gave me the yellow card.”

“PGMOL is aware of the comments made by Jurgen Klopp following his side’s fixture with Tottenham Hotspur,” read a statement issued in response to Klopp’s inflammatory remarks. In the Premier League, match officials are recorded in all games using a communications system.

“After thoroughly reviewing the audio of referee Paul Tierney from today’s game, we can confirm he acted professionally throughout, including when issuing the caution to Liverpool manager Klopp.” As a result, we categorically deny any suggestion that Tierney’s actions were improper.”
