Rangers lose potential when Philippe Clement leaves as an official. Hint from Steven Gerrard in a 51-word statement

Rangers Football Club has officially parted ways with manager Philippe Clement following a series of disappointing performances, culminating in a 2-0 home defeat to St Mirren on February 22, 2025. This loss left Rangers trailing 13 points behind Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic.

Clement, appointed in October 2023, had a tenure marked by initial successes, including securing the Scottish League Cup in December 2023 with a 1-0 victory over Aberdeen. However, subsequent inconsistent performances, particularly in domestic competitions, eroded confidence in his leadership. Notably, Rangers suffered a Scottish Cup exit to Queen’s Park and a League Cup final defeat to Celtic on penalties in December 2024.

The club’s statement expressed sincere thanks to Clement for his hard work and dedication during his tenure and indicated that further updates regarding his successor would be provided in due course.

In the interim, Under-18s coach Kevin Thomson and assistant manager Issame Charai are potential candidates to oversee the upcoming match against Kilmarnock.

The search for a new manager has commenced, with several names emerging as potential candidates. Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, who led the club to the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership title, is among the frontrunners. However, his potential return may be delayed until April due to tax implications related to his recent tenure in Saudi Arabia.

Another strong contender is former Rangers defender Russell Martin, who has managerial experience with Southampton and is currently unemployed. Influential figures within the Rangers board view him as a serious candidate for the position.

Additionally, former Everton manager Sean Dyche has been linked to the role, with reports suggesting that discussions have taken place between him and the Rangers hierarchy.

Clement’s departure comes at a time when Rangers are reportedly engaged in takeover talks with a US-led consortium, potentially leading to significant investment in the club.

The club aims to appoint a new manager promptly to stabilize the team’s performance and address the significant points gap with rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.Rangers Sack Philippe Clement
