Cody Gakpo’s disallowed goal against Aston Villa on Saturday could have altered the outcome of Liverpool’s game

The Premier League has explained the peculiar VAR system that resulted in the reversal of Cody Gakpo’s Liverpool equalizer. Despite Roberto Firmino’s late goal to draw the game against Aston Villa on Saturday, Jurgen Klopp could have won all three points if Gakpo’s close-range goal had been allowed to stand.

When Gakpo slammed into the bottom corner, they appeared to have a chance of survival, but referee John Brooks overturned the goal after extensive VAR review. Despite the fact that the former PSV Eindhoven forward remained loyal throughout the trade, fans were perplexed by the final decision.

Ezra Konsa diverted Luis Diaz’s header back across goal, where it fell at the feet of Virgil van Dijk, who was beyond the last line of defense but appeared to have playing onside before crossing back in, but Brooks determined that Konsa’s involvement was inadvertent.

According to a Premier League statement, it was critical that Konsa did not intend to play the ball. “The VAR recommended a review,” it stated. And referee John Brooks determined that it was an unintentional deflection off Ezri Konsa rather than a deliberate act.

The Reds suffered a crushing defeat as a result, and despite Firmino’s late equalizer in his final game at Anfield, the Reds will almost certainly have to compete in Europe’s second-tier club competition next season.

Klopp was issued a touchline suspension after making comments about referee Paul Tierney last month, and he was forced to watch the game from the stands. Tyrone Mings was shown a red card, and Villa’s goal was overturned.

Instead, Klopp chastised Villa, another team aiming for a place in Europe under Unai Emery, for wasting time. “The time wasting was… wow,” Klopp commented.

“Against Sevilla, we saw the ball boys leave the country.” How long did Roma and Leverkusen have possession of the ball? Everyone is involved in it. This has happened in a lot of games this season. Nothing to do with today’s outcome.

To close the season, the Reds will go to Southampton, which has been relegated. Klopp admits that his club has been far too terrible for a long time to warrant fourth place.
