Old Trafford giants want to keep their Premier League comeback going
The news that Manchester United and Ajax have agreed to terms for the acquisition of Brazilian winger Antony came as the team prepared to play Leicester in the Premier League on Thursday.
When United travels to the King Power Stadium with Leicester at the bottom of the standings, they will be looking to continue their ascent up the table after losing their first two games. United has since rebounded with victory against Liverpool and Southampton.
The match may be too soon for Antony, who played for Ajax under United manager Erik ten Hag, scoring 12 goals and dishing out 10 assists in 33 games across all competitions as the Dutch club won the Eredivisie title for the third time in a row and advanced to the round of 16 in the Champions League the previous season.
After leaving Sao Paulo for Amsterdam in February 2020, Antony has scored twice in nine appearances for Brazil since his debut in 2021.
He will join Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen, and Casemiro as United’s fifth close-season additions.
The announcement comes at a time when rumors regarding striker Cristiano Ronaldo’s future are ramping up. The Portuguese star is reportedly looking to depart Old Trafford after the team’s failure to make the Champions League after their season-ending Champions League loss.
