Pundit Paul Merson has predicted who will finish in the top four of the Premier League this season, including whether Liverpool will make the cut
The former Arsenal man has weighed up who he believes will secure a place in next season’s Champions League for his Sportskeeda predictions column.
Merson’s 1 and 2 was always going to be too far ahead of Arsenal and Manchester City.
Manchester United are third, having looked much improved under Erik ten Hag this season, despite their recent 7-0 thrashing at the hands of the Merseyside club.
As a result, selecting a team for fourth place is undoubtedly the most difficult.
Tottenham Hotspur are currently in the running for a place in the Champions League, having collected 48 points from 27 games.
Newcastle United are fifth with 44 points from 25 games, while Liverpool are sixth with 42 points from 26 games.
Brighton and Brentford could easily close the gap, making the margins for a top-four spot extremely thin.
While the Reds have recently emerged as title contenders, Merson has chosen Spurs instead, owing to Liverpool’s 1-0 loss to Bournemouth at the weekend.
“Paul Merson’s top-four predictions: Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur.”
Merson does not believe Liverpool will finish in the top four.
After Liverpool’s 7-0 thrashing of Manchester United, fans thought the team’s season had turned a corner.
The Reds have looked like a shadow of themselves this season, so it was easy to fantasize when a few results went their way.
Six days later, however, Jurgen Klopp’s men failed to capitalize on their momentum. Liverpool blew an opportunity to close the gap on Tottenham by losing 1-0 to Bournemouth.
With their current form, the Reds will not qualify for the Champions League next season.
They haven’t demonstrated why they deserve it, despite the fact that the Spurs haven’t looked much better recently.
