Henderson has been at Liverpool for 11 years, having moved from Sunderland, where he was managed by Kenny Dalglish.

Following the departure of Steven Gerrard, he was appointed captain of the Reds in 2015. Henderson has approximately 500 club appearances and is one of Jurgen Klopp’s most dependable players.

With Liverpool, he won eight titles, including the Premier League and the Champions League on separate occasions.

Henderson, at 32, played in his third World Cup in Qatar, making four appearances for England and scoring one.

However, things were not always so good for the midfielder in his early days at Anfield. He said earlier this year in an interview with BT Sport’s ‘Between the Lines’ (via Daily Mail) that Liverpool were eager to let him leave the club in 2012, barely a year after he arrived.

Fulham accepted a bid for Henderson, but he elected to stay and battle for his spot, which he easily won.

The Reds captain has previously spoken about an incident that occurred in training shortly after he joined the club.

Henderson discussed the stress he faced at a young age on Jamie Carragher’s ‘The Greatest Game’ podcast in 2019 (per GiveMeSport), and how tempers once got the better of him and teammate Luis Suarez.

Suarez joined Liverpool in January 2012, after the ex-Sunderland player moved to Anfield himself.

Henderson elaborated: “I was attempting to do my best. As a footballer, you are constantly criticized and questioned.

“I was a young player at the time, and there were a few things Luis did in training that I didn’t like. It made me feel like I wasn’t good enough to be on the same training team as them.

“The arms were raised as if to say, ‘What the f***, what is he doing?'” It’s as if I shouldn’t be there. That hurt me a lot.

“He did it three times before I blew out and was ready to murder him.”

Henderson, on the other hand, said that the duo swiftly patched things up and never looked back.

“I had a wonderful relationship with Luis from that point on. I put him up for his goal in the next game. He was terrific after that, and I became very close to him; he was another major player from whom I learnt.”

Henderson and Suarez were teammates for two and a half years before the Uruguayan moved to Barcelona in the summer of 2014.

Carragher discusses his reaction to the Henderson/Suarez affair.
