Jordan Henderson, the Liverpool captain, is still no closer to leaving Anfield as his move to Saudi Arabia grinds on

Henderson has reportedly accepted a huge offer from Saudi Pro League team Al Ettifaq, shocking English football. Following the weekend’s events, his exit from Liverpool appears to be unavoidable.

However, the Liverpool Echo reports that this may not be the case. They maintain that, despite claims of continuous talks between Liverpool and Al Ettifaq, no ‘formal’ contact has been made between the clubs.

Even if that happens, the Reds are thought to be ‘unwilling’ to accept a ‘cut-price’ deal for Henderson. Unless Al Ettifaq makes an acceptable offer, the 33-year-old appears to be on his way out.

In terms of what constitutes a good offer, Liverpool is said to have ‘noted’ the £20 million spent on bringing Kalidou Koulibaly from Chelsea to Al Hilal. This appears to be the yardstick.

Henderson is being made to wait for a Saudi move.
To be honest, we don’t know whether this is good or terrible news. In some ways, it’s a good thing Liverpool isn’t about to lose both its captain and Fabinho.

On the other hand, getting this mess sorted out would undoubtedly benefit everyone.

It’s difficult to envision Henderson coming back at Anfield right now. Not as captain, for sure. He made his bed with the Saudis, and now he must sleep in it.

As a result, he should leave now, one way or another. Liverpool appears to be looking harder and longer at the market than they expected to this summer. They cannot afford any delays in reaching their objectives.

At the same time, they have every right to seek a reasonable cost for Henderson.

Something in the region of £15-20 million seems reasonable for a player who still has a lot to contribute. It wasn’t long ago that Jurgen Klopp described Henderson as ‘excellent’ [The Daily Mail]. There’s no reason for him to offer anyone any favors with two years left on his contract.

If Al Ettifaq isn’t willing to go there, they should get out of Jordan’s ear and move on. If they are, then put the money on the table and quit causing havoc. You sense that important days are ahead.
