“Not quite the same”: Spanish media reacts to Johnny Cardoso v Real Madrid following Tottenham Hotspur agreement

Tottenham Hotspur have set up a potentially interesting deal for the future, with the summer transfer season being closed

Tottenham Hotspur fans had little to scream about over the weekend.

Deadline day passed without any new additions, as Tottenham lost 2-1 to Newcastle United on Sunday, despite dominating the game.

Giovani Lo Celso, who had previously played for Tottenham, has now joined Real Betis.

The Argentinian has failed to meet expectations since signing from Betis in 2019, and he is now returning to La Liga to restart his career.

Lo Celso’s departure barely registered on Tottenham’s radar given his overall lack of effect at the club, but there was one point of interest.

Spanish media reports on a probable Tottenham Hotspur transfer Johnny Cardoso
Tottenham reached an intriguing agreement as part of Lo Celso’s departure.

Tottenham have agreed to a first option on Johnny Cardoso as part of Lo Celso’s return to Betis.

Spurs may now activate that option on Cardoso by next summer, bringing the US international to North London.

If Spurs do not sign Cardoso, they can still claim a portion of any price Betis receives when they sell him elsewhere.

Spurs have remained mute on the matter, but Betis president Angel Haro has confirmed that Tottenham can sign Cardoso.

That is an intriguing move, and Cardoso was in action on Sunday night when Betis played Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Cardoso did not start the game, but came off the bench as Kylian Mbappe scored twice to lead Real to a 2-0 victory.

Tottenham fans will be eager to learn how their prospective future midfielder performed, but the Spanish press had mixed feelings.

El Desmarque gave Cardoso a four-out-of-ten rating, implying that he does not look the same as he did last season.

“He is not quite the same as last season, with errors with the ball and sometimes arriving late,” they noted.

Estadio Deportivo was a little more optimistic, noting that Betis actually improved defensively with Cardoso on the pitch.

“With the American right next to Marc Roca, Pellegrini managed to stop the first local avalanche and Betis came back for a few minutes, before Mbappé sealed the victory in seven minutes,” according to their account.

El Correo de Andalucia fell somewhere in between the two, implying that Cardoso initially aided Betis but is definitely not in peak form.

“He came on for William to assist Marc Roca in containing Madrid. They were able to do so for a few minutes, but the American is still far from peak form,” they stated.

Cardoso in and out for Betis as Tottenham watches on.
Cardoso is now having a successful season.

The 22-year-old joined Betis from Brazilian club Internacional in January, but he is now vying for a move to the Premier League by 2025.

We can see Cardoso feeling a touch ‘under the microscope’ with Tottenham watching his every move for the rest of the season.

Spurs will be watching attentively as they decide whether or not to splash the cash and bring Cardoso to North London.

Real Madrid is a difficult game for anyone, and Tottenham will be searching for attributes and potential to see if they can develop Cardoso into a star down the road.

Seeing Cardoso in and out of the Betis side doesn’t exactly assist Tottenham right now, but it’s all part of his development process.

‘One of the worst players on the pitch’: Tottenham signing undergoes horror show in debut start for new club.

The Brazilian was anticipated to come in as a rotation option for struggling Davide Calabria, but not everyone at the Serie A club was sold on the signing

Emerson got his first start for the Rossoneri in a tie against Lazio over the weekend, and he struggled from the start. The right-back scored both of Lazio’s goals, and he is already receiving a lot of criticism from Milan fans.

MilanNews assessed Emerson’s performance during the weekend, describing him as ‘one of the poorest players on the pitch’.

They believe that things did not go well for Emerson, citing press assessments of the full-back.
They cite Gazzetta dello Sport as rating him a 5, noting that the ex-Barcelona player ran out of gas in the second half.

MilanNews gives the 25-year-old a grade of 5, while Corriere dello Sport gives him 5.5.

There’s a danger that some of those who weren’t convinced about signing Emerson from Tottenham in the first place may rush to pass judgment on him, given it’s still early days for the Brazilian.

Andy Walker makes a shocking prediction for Celtic vs Rangers.

The first Glasgow Derby of the season is underway, with Celtic hosting Rangers at Celtic Park for the midday kickoff

Brendan Rodgers’ squad leads the Scottish Premiership by two points and has the possibility to widen the gap between Celtic and Rangers if the Irishman wins again this afternoon.

Last season, Rodgers and Celtic dominated Rangers in this fixture, going undefeated and winning four of the five Glasgow Derbies to win the league and Scottish Cup.

And, as the big game approaches, Celtic fans will undoubtedly be nervous, as they always are when a match against Rangers is on the horizon.

However, Andy Walker shows no signs of nervousness. In fact, the former Celtic striker believes the Hoops will win this afternoon’s game ‘comfortably’.

Walker: Rangers ‘would take’ a draw against Celtic.
Walker was asked before of today’s game to predict how he sees the big game playing out.

And, speaking confidently, Walker stated that Rangers ‘cannot create a case’ to win anything at Celtic Park today.

Walker told The Go Radio Football Show, “Typically, you look at it and wonder who will win. It’s usually really tight, and if you tip someone, it’s by a goal. I believe Celtic can win by three goals.

“I believe they can win comfortably. “I’m going 3-0 Celtic.”

“We have been saying that for several months now. They need stronger players, and when I look at the Rangers’ lineup, I believe it is critical for the manager to be able to put something together to demonstrate his ability to deliver a strong performance.

“There are several huge names playing on this important event. Rangers, if you offered them a draw now, they would accept it.

“I cannot make a case for Rangers winning at Parkhead.”

Celtic’s recent record of defeating Rangers

Over the last three years, Celtic have consistently won the Glasgow Derby. Since the Scottish Cup semi-final defeat in 2022, Parkhead has lost only one of its last 12 games.

Walker’s forecast of a comfortable 3-0 Celtic Park triumph is supported by the fact that these games have been quite close in terms of scoreline over the last two seasons.

In fact, you had to go back to that legendary afternoon at Celtic Park in March 2022 to locate the last time Celtic won this game comfortably.

That day, a 4-0 triumph under Ange Postecoglou hammered home Celtic’s dominance, sealing the record-breaking
