With nearly all of the college football discussion focused on the College Football Playoff national championship, former Alabama head coach Nick Saban zoomed out the conversation to discuss some of the undercurrents taking root in today’s NIL era of the sport.
Specifically, the seven-time national champion coach highlighted the disparity in what schools can afford that undermines the pay scale.
“The people out there need to know this model is unsustainable,” Saban told reporters. “It is not good for the players. People in Congress–I don’t care who has to get off their asses and act.
“There is no doubt that players deserve to be compensated. However, it must be done in a way that maintains some level of competitive balance. “Every school has the same thing,” Saban explained. “One school can’t spend $30 million for players while another school spends $3 million.”
McAfee concluded Saban’s words with, “You’re going to be the one who has to fix it.” His point is that college football, like the NFL, requires a commissioner, and all major sports, including Saban, should be considered for that job.
