Darwin Nunez says his wife has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love from Liverpool fans this season
Nunez is maturing into the terrific young forward Liverpool hoped he would be after a rocky start at Anfield. Following an outstanding February, the 23-year-old was named the club’s Player of the Month for the second time.
Now, speaking to liverpoolfc.com after receiving his prize, Nunez made sure to thank the Reds fans on his and his wife’s behalf.
“First and foremost, I’d like to thank the supporters for that because when you come out to warm up and then hear your name being screamed by the crowd, it’s just wonderful and gives me chills,” the Uruguayan added.
“That’s the first time I’ve heard anything like it. It’s fantastic for both myself and my wife. ‘It’s fantastic how they support you and are always behind you,’ she remarked. She always tells me that even when I was struggling with form in the first few games, the fans were always there to encourage me.
“They never gave up on me and were always supportive. Now it’s all about appreciating them and attempting to help them.

Liverpool maintains its confidence in Darwin.
This is wonderful to hear from Darwin. In recent years, we’ve grown accustomed to dull and predictable interviews with football players. Yet you can tell Nunez means what he’s saying here.
It’s easy to forget that football players’ families see and hear everything that happens inside a stadium. If a player is surrounded with negativity, they can block it out on the field. Yet, loved ones feel it firsthand from others around them on the ground.
In Darwin’s situation, a little negativity could easily have crept in at times. The former Benfica player has certainly received a lot of unjustified criticism on social media. Yet, it must be emphasized, not from Liverpool fans in general.
It would have been simple to turn on him as he battled to justify his price tag on the pitch – and then got sent off on his Anfield debut. Instead, the Reds’ fan base shifted completely in the opposite direction. He isn’t perfect, but he is ours.
His enthusiasm and effort rate shine through on the field, and he certainly gives it his all in every game he plays. That type of thing is well known among fans. They never gave up on him. That faith is being rewarded now that Darwin has calmed down a little. Darwin, keep doing what you’re doing!
